Dog at Large

We left our golden retriever, Dax, at home overnight while we went to Fillmore for the 4th of July.  When we returned on the the next day he was no where to be found. Someone must have opened the gate and let him out. Since the animal shelter was closed for the weekend, we did what we could. Signs were posted, the area was canvased, neighbors were interrogated.

Maya, who normally has little to do with Dax, was utterly distraught. “I said five prayers to ask Jesus to help us find Dax and for him not to be hungry”, she cried.

This morning I checked the shelter and sure enough, there was Dax, convicted of being a “Dog at Large”. He seemed somewhat hardened.  Now he is adjusting to “life on the outside”.  I just hope he learned his lesson.  I surely did…after paying $80 to the animal shelter, and another $200 to Saratoga Springs city for the fine. I questioned for a moment how bad we wanted him back.  Maybe I can round up the rest of the dogs in the neighborhood and charge admission to a “Scared Straight” program.

Update:
Turns out our suspicions that someone let him out were totally false.  Dax has become a jumper.  He found a part of our backyard, where the ground is a little higher on the inside, making our six foot fence a 5½ foot fence.  I watched him jump over it.  Even a thorny rose bush landing on the other side didn’t deter him.  I’ll be borrowing my neighbor’s shock collar…this dog’s got to learn a lesson.

Ok, that is hilarious. This is one of those times you reflect on how much you do for your kids. I tell you what though, if you ever find out who let him out…..they are going to be on pooper scooper duty for a loooong time.

Your story made me laugh! I can just imagine all that you and you family went through to bring Dax home. It’s a good thing that your little one said those five prayers. My dog Reno gets a little wild hair now and goes out home teaching not to be seen for a while. Up to this point he has not been incarcerated, but I am sure his day is coming. When I put his shock collar on he is a perfect gentlemen. Most of the time I don’t even have to turn it on.

That is so funny !! At first before I read you found him I was really sad and then I read the part where he jumped over the fence and thru the rose bush and it reminded me of our old dog harley who was also a golden retriever. I don’t know if you remember him Kayelynne when you used to baby sit me and he jumped over our fence too. He would climb on the waterfall and over the fence :) !!!! Good thing you got him back better find a way to keep him from jumpin over the fence LOL!!!!
